Don't sand it, that would take forever, everyone else is right, scrape it down, but before you do, wet it down, it will soften the "popcorn" and make it a lot easier to scrape off. Work in 3' squares and you'll be surprised how fast , and easy it can be.
PS you don't "have" to get rid of them, you can paint over the popcorn, just a thought

Either move everything out of the room or buy yourself a roll of plastic and cover every inch in your sons room. Get yourself a hand held garden sprayer and wet an area and scrape away, once ceiling has been scraped of all texture let dry out and prime and sand. Now inspect your ceiling for imperfections that you want to fix because it's the reason why they put this type of texture on in the 1st place to hide all the flaws. Do your skim coat and repairs and sand, spot prime or prime the whole ceiling and your ready for your finish paint, sounds like a long hard process but waiting for the paint and compound to dry is the hardest. Good luck Les the painter

I would sand it down. You could start with a strong bristled brush to get the large, easier chunks off, then go over it again with good quality sand paper to smooth it out.
**It's going to get MESSY and very dusty from all the texture your sanding off - so you may want to clear the room out or securely cover everything before you get started. Also, I'd wear a protective eye covering so the particles don't fall in your eyes (and they will!) A mask over your mouth & nose would be good too.**
After its sanded down and smooth, paint it as directed on the paint canister.
When all that's said & done, you should be able to put up your solar system! Have fun with it!
