I think it originates from "I swear to god" and is supposed to mean your telling the truth. "I swear" is used when you have No other proof to back up what your saying, but you want to convince someone to believe you. Some think it is bad to "swear to God because your using his name in vain. That's just my opinion anyway. I'm interested in hearing other answers as well.

The most popular use of "swear" is to refer to extreme language as an expression of anger or frustration. The words used are most commonly sexual, or insults or corrupt uses of religious terms.

This overlaps with "cursing" which in the past had a more specific sense of wishing and calling down ill against a person or even object.

Both historically had more serious connotations.
To swear in court is still to make a solemn and binding promise. (an "oath", another term which now can mean nothing more than bad language.)
"Swear" as "I promise" is also still in wider use.
A curse was an evil spell or promise of ill in many cultures. There are plenty of examples in the bible. (Deuteronomy Ch 28)

Matthew 5:33-37; thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's thrine: Nor by the earth; for it is his footstoool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
