How well the product presents itself, quality, reputation of the company that made the product. What are other people saying about this product. Read customer complaints/reviews.

I believe that build quality is good for allmost everything we buy, especially over the 500,- mark. That's because most things you're talking about - dishwasher, stereo, fridge - are proven technology. They're not bleeding edge; manifacturers have had about half a century to get it right.
And if they mess up, there is always guarantee.

So, what do I look for?
Price is important, and energy consumption (this is a very important one for me).
