you have to build up stamina for running races. it's not something you can do in a day or two - or even a week. you should have been running every day for about a month to get ready for that... haha no wonder your friends doubt your ability as a runner. you expect to sit around and strategize for the race instead of just getting off your butt and running!

how fast can you run dude?

dude, take it easy ok.
here's the drill. practice as usual but run more than 3k. make sure that u don't do any heavy workout on the day before the race. Only some light training...jogging..etc in the morning. do get enough rest for the race.
during the race, you must watch out the favourite runner. try to be as near to him as possible. do not let him break away because play catching up is not easy if you are not a strong runner. (defn. 'strong' is like those african runners)
run to your 70% max ability (i used to use HRM to gauge this)
and leave some energy to sprint at the end.
i'm not sure how you guys run in your age category, but in the men's cat, 3K is not a long distance run but a mid distance sprint.
So when you practice try to run for 5 mins, sprint (85%) for 30 sec, run recovery for 5 mins then repeat the sprint...so on.
frankly, it takes a lot of practice, competitions, sacrifice to win races, maybe you should not put too high hopes in this race.
set a long term objectives with systematic training programme.
and don't run alone, practice with a fellow runner of your own level.
there is no short cut in winning races.
good luck dude..
