Of course they do. All that training and practice is there.
Use of Force continuum's usually dictate going through those "intermediate" weapons before being allowed to go to hand to hand fighting (whenever practical).

Personally I'm a 6'5" 270 pound sissy with a 400 pound bench press. I only took martial arts for about twelve years of my life. I also only bounced for six years before becoming a cop, while I was in the Navy and college. I even did some proffesional wrestling. So, no I can't protect myself. What kind of question is this? Every cop is different. I even know cops that I wouldn't want to come to a fight with all of their stuff. I know others that never take anything off their belt. What about you? Can you protect your self? I don't mean in the fetal possition.

We get taught some basic officer safety techniques. However I think in the heat of the moment it just comes down to basic survival. Our training is repeated regularly to keep us up to speed.

Yes, they chase you to a pre-specified spot on the road marked with a large "X" and then drop an anvil on your head.
