A lot of people in our culture today do their fellow Christians a disservice when they paint a picture of an imaginary perfect world once you become a Christian. No one ever said Christianity would be easy, but if you are really sincere and want to know how to stay strong during the difficult times that come (and come they will...) I would suggest reading some of Paul's letters when he was in prison. Also James is an excellent book. Seeing what Paul went though and how he reacted to it helps me to put things in perspective sometimes.
Also the Bible talks about gathering together with other Christians for both fellowship and to support one another. The church was designed to be a sort of support system for all Christians where each member brings their gifts (both physical and spiritual) and uses them for the greater good of the body.
It is vitally important that you have good Christians friends to keep you in line, as well as one person that you can talk to about anything that will hold you accountable to your faith.

i like to let the bible speak for itself
Hebrews 11:1
Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.
2 Corinthians 5:7
We live by faith, not by sight.
Hebrews 12:1-3
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
Galatians 6:9
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
blessings upon you and this young man

To be a true Christian is a daily struggle. This is a fact for us all who believe. It is easy to throw caution to the wind and deceive ourselves into believing that we need no one but ourselves, However, God needs you and wants you to need Him as much.
Read throughout the OT and you will see the struggle that the Jews had on following through on Gods rules and stay faithful during that time. Many times when they turned against God, they ended up turn back towards Him when stuff hit the fan.
You are not perfect and to deceive yourself into thinking that you are is wrong. Accept who you are on the inside and strengthen your faith in God, and allow Him to help pull you out on your hard times in life. Even when you feel at your total best, Give Thanks to Him that all is going great in life at that time(not yourself)

Jesus said "If any man would come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross DAILY and follow Me." All Christians struggle with this. You're not alone. We all turn to God when things are tough, and often fail to thank Him when things are going our way. You can start by, when things do get better, offering up a prayer of thanks. Then, daily, take some time, whether it's just a brief moment of if you have time, and hour or so, and just pray, or read your Bible, or just meditate on God. Spend time with Him whenever you can. Good Luck.

1) No long periods of time between now and the last time you read the Bible.
2) Read the Bible everyday.
3) Listen to at least one preaching of the word at least three times a week. ( For faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.)
Here are some sermons by Pastor Chuck Smith. They are free, and you can listen to all of this series on you computer:
