Great time of the year to go to NYC. September can still have a lot of hot days and it will still feel like it's July sometimes but chances are it won't be as uncomfortable and humid. October is great too since it rarely gets so cold that you'd freeze. I've always felt that we don't have much of a spring or autumn here because the weather seems to jump from summer to winter and back again sometimes so if you're trying to find nice weather, that's a good time.
As far as tourism goes, there seems to still be a lot of it going on that time of year especially for Europeans (lots of people from Germany are around then for some reason)
School holidays? All I can think of are Labor Day (Sept 3rd this year) and Columbus Day which will be Oct 8th. Those are the only days I know of that are 'bank holidays' so I assume that they are school holidays as well.

You are travelling at the best time. The weather is great, you get spring and summer weather. Hotels are at an off season you you will save on your room. New Yorkers are back from vacation and there are less tourists so the night life will be back in full force. School is closed for Columbus Day, Yom Kippur, and some even close for Rosh Hashanah(private schools). I really recommend Central Park(canoe rides, walking, the zoo), Museum of Modern Art, shopping in SoHo, Brooklyn Brewery(Williamsburg Brooklyn on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, getting lost on the Lower East Side. There are so many cool things to do. If you really want to spend an evening like a young New Yorker, go to myopenbar.com for free open bars and good parties.

A September/Octobe vacation in New York is an excellent choice. The weather is usually perfect. Central Park is breathtaking when the leaves change color.
The New York City public schools open after Labor Day after the summer vacation. Schools are closed Columbus Day and Yom Kippur.
Have a great time.

Sept-dec is the most expensive time for hotels. It you can make it in August, then you will save a bundle (a lot of people are at the beach).
If money is not a problem, then September is the best time. All of the natives are "rediscovering" the city after spending the summer in the Hamptons.

Babe, ANY time is a great time to visit NYC! If you truly will be here near the end of baseball season, catch a game at Yankee Stadium and/or Shea. They're getting torn down, and that's where you see real New Yorkers come to life. Have fun, and take care! Good luck ~N

in case you like the real experience of the city and/or you elect to discover, definitely take the subway. it would be slightly intimidating in the commencing up, inspite of the undeniable fact that it rather is particularly handy once you're attempting to get someplace. The MTA buses are additionally attainable. Plus, sensible telephones have apps for maps of the NYC subway device and MTA bus routes. Taxis are additionally a good selection in case you're up for the fare.

Great weather, great time to be in NYC, however... mid to late September is also fashion week and hotel rates and availability are affected. Early September is probably best.
