Just worry about getting a dog that is good with the children. Any dog will become protective of their family after you have them for a while. If you try to get a dog bred for protection, you will get aggressive traits, and that is just asking for trouble around kids. In my experience, some of the most loving, protective pets come from animal shelters because they know what it is like not to have a family that loves them, so they appreciate it more once they do. My advice is to check out your local animal shelter for a dog that will grow to love your family so much he would do anything to protect you.

I'm a German Shepherd man myself. I won't disagree with Pandora, but, German Shepherds are the same way.
If you go to www.akc.org they list all the breeds and tell how dogs are and recommended with children.
I myself think a Doberman, Rottweiler, German Shepherd, Mastiff, breeds are good dogs to have for kids and to be protective of home and family.
Get them as a Puppy though so they will grow and recognize the children as family and no worries.
But, I suggest you read up on "How to choose the right Dog" at the AKC site. 5 Puppies of the same breed from different litters will not have the same temperment. There is a way to choose a good tempered Puppy, and good to meet the Sire and Dame (Dad and Mom) or at leats of course the Mom, and how to judge a Puppy when picking it out and up.
Good Luck!
OH YES,.......and Boxers too are good as Babydoll mentioned below!

Black lab without a doubt. They are super gentle and extremely loyal. Protection is not about aggression but more about the bond that the child and family make with the dog. After a strong bond has been established, labs are faithful, loving, protective, and most importantly trustworthy with a child. Anytime any dog becomes attached to a family, it's natural instinct is to guard it's pack and fight to the death to protect those in the pack (family). Black labs are the best choice for young families in my opinion.

Pembroke Welsh corgi! They are great with kids and very well known for their protective nature. They have a VERY keen sense of their surroundings and will alarm when anything is wrong. They are super intelligent, dedicated, loving and protective of their people and home. The Queen of England's breed is an excellent choice for what you are looking for in a pet and protector. Be very careful when selecting a breed that can be a liability concern.

English Bull Terrier - Very good with children and make good guard dogs. They are very loyal to their human family and they are also very cute. If you want to have a look at a Bull Terrier, see the link below.
By the way an English Bull Terrier is NOT a Pit Bull in any way, shape or form.

I would suggest a Basset Hound puppy They are good with kids. Mind you it takes some training for both. The adults must be present at all times when the puppy are with the children. Discipline must be instill in both the children and the pup. Eventually, the Basset pup will be protective of the children. They will also bark if they should hear any unusual noise.

You may think that I'm crazy but i would recommend a rottweiler. We got one when my daughter was a year old for family pet and protection. That dog loved our daughter to death. She could do anything that she wanted to that dog. She even used her to start walking.
She also was very protective of us she wouldn't let anyone that she didn't know in the yard. She would have to be right by us. She never bit anyone or even growled but just her presence was enough.

An awsome Dobie--they are the most loving--kind--intelligent-- - protective-(of their family) breed you can have!! They will do whatever is necessary to protect their family! They also have a natural instinct about "good or bad" people--I always trust mine! A pup is best so it can be raised with your family--Dobies are house dogs--not yard dogs--they need to be with their people!

Go with a Golden Retriever. I have had two of them in my life and with both of them they love the people in their family and protect them. They also learn who your friends an neighbors are will like them if you do. They are awesome dogs!

terriers are lovely and small, but they can be snappy so are not good with young children. Golden retreviers are wonderful. They are a large dog, but they are very gentle natured, (prefect with kids of all ages) and will not allow people not known to them to approach the family.
