Why would America support Iraq during the Iran-Iraq war and then declare war against Iraq when it invaded Kuwait only two years after that war had finished?

Why did they support the invasion of one country and not the other?
It boggles the mind.

Nixon ordered the "tilt toward Iraq" as revenge for the storming of the ousting of the Shah. The Shah had been most helpful to the U.S. ever since he risen to the Peacock Throne. Prior to his taking power the U.S. had overthrown Mossadegh. The Shah was very accomodating with low cost oil to American Oil interests. So as a counter balance to the revolutionaries Nixon supplied Saddam with sophisiticated weapons. He was our "boy" in th Middle East.

The cold war a few years earlier was still in place and Iran at the time was aligned with the Soviet Union, a country which had 20,000 nukes capable of taking out 100 million americans - approximately 2 hours after WW3 began

Opposing Iran was part of that containment strategy

The next battle involved opposing Iraq on behalf of Kuwait - to keep oil flowing along with the industrialized free world
