My US address is Texas, and my parents received a jury summons for me. None of the disqualification critiera apply to me, but I am wondering if my living abroad can disqualify me from having to attend.

Yes, you can be excused when you're out of the country and there's no reasonable way you could attend. I had this situation recently with a neighbor whose mail I collect while she's away for the winter. I called and told them where she was and how it was impossible for her to attend and they excused her. Ask your parents to call and see if they'll excuse you.

My first question is would they cover your travel expense?

Actually I think you will be excused. Bush was called in 2005 and didn't attend.

More importantly having a residence in the state and even paying state taxes or property tax does not entitle you to be resident of a state. You will only notice this if you return to your state and attempt to:

1. Get a library card,
2. Obtain a drivers license, as opposed to renew,
3. Get a hunting license,
Or and this is the big one that has bitten lots of Ex-Pats,
4. Try to enroll your children in a state school as a resident, when they have obtained their secondary education overseas.

It's happened to me and many other expats I've known.

When my daughter returned to the University where my mother had been the Professor Emeritus for more than a decade and in the town where I grew up, owned property and been my only address while overseas; she was treated as a 'Non-Resident. Fortunately she was able to get a Scholarship.

The worst affected are Californians due to the high out of state fees.

Sooo, I think you will be excused with out prejudice.

No Problem,

Home state is Illinois, I live in Germany.

Also received a summons at my old home address.

Had my Mom call them and ask them if they were willing to pay my travel expenses and per diem for me to serve on the jury.

I was excused over the telephone...

Call the clerk of the court. The phone number will be on the summons. They almost certainly release you from the obligation.

your mailing address must be the same as your parents. I live in Oklahoma & my county I was licensed in sent me a summons but I was excused because I had moved to a different county!

Call the court clerk and say that you reside overseas and you have no money to travel back to the states. He/she may ask you to fax or mail a copy of a utility bill in your name, but they will almost certainly dismiss you for sure.

If you do not intend to return to the US becasue we are so dipleasing to you, perhaps you should become a citizen of another country so you won't have this issue again. I would guess that is why you call yourself an expat. You should be excused, although I am off the belief that if you retain citizenship you should not be excused.
