Stymie gave a very simple and profound answer. "I think" is not a valid argument for or against anything. Worse yet is the argument that "I know" - because the Bible said so, or because it is what I was taught, or because it just makes sense to me.

Good argument for religion: Mankind needs to feel that there is some reason, some purpose for their existence and that of the universe. That purpose implies a supreme being who devised that purpose. We need to feel that there is someone who loves us, who watches over us. We need a supreme father figure. But we also need to account for all the evil we see in the world, and for that we make up either a pantheon of evil gods, or a legion of demons led by the evil equivalent of God, that being Satan, Lucifer, the Prince of Darkness.

Good argument against religion: Since prehistorical times mankind has attributed everything they could not understand to the supernatural, whether it was Helios the sun god carrying the sun across the sky every day in his fiery chariot, dragons which left giant bones in the ground, demons possessing people and making them do crazy things or act like wild animals, or Jehovah speaking the universe into instant existence. As mankind's understanding and knowledge of science has progressed, these religious beliefs and explanations have been explained away and in most cases, dropped from religious dogma.

We know that gravity and the rotation of the Earth, not Helios, makes the sun appear to move across the sky. We know that dinosaurs, not dragons, left giant bones in the ground. We know that brain injury, mental illness, and pharmacological factors, not demons, cause people to act crazy or like animals. We know that the universe evolved over billions of years, not in six days, or six thousand years.

It will be interesting to see how other religious beliefs are supplanted by science in the future, and how long it will take before logic overcomes myth and religion becomes a minor factor in the human experience.

The worst argument is to just believe because? The other answer is not to because you have no proof. You had no proof about Sadaam but here we are in a 5 year war anyway even after it has been proven that you had no proof from the begginning. People do what they want then try to justify it later. Go with what you feel is best for you in your life do what you want to beleive is best for your life.

For: God is all around us. Look at nature and your very existence as proof that He exists & because the bible says so.

Against: God doesn't help me when I whine to Him and allows bad things to happen for no apparent reason. He's cruel and sadistic and a big old meanie.

Both are cop outs in my opinion. Just say, I don't know if God exists but I happen to believe He does or doesn't. End of.

Worst argument against: None of that could possibly be true, we have evolved from apes, and that is all there is to it.

Worst argument for: I've been in the church since I was born, I got saved when I was three - there is no doubt in my mind that there is a God.

Both of these are faulted because they are not informed. They haven't looked at anyone else's opinion or standing, and they have no proof to back-up their beliefs.
