I am a 100% service connected from the war in 'Nam. I receive compensation and all my medical as well as meds are free. I go to the James Haley VA Hospital in Tampa, FL and they are excellent.
Now getting my 100% was a pain, but the care givers are great.

They're supposed to. But it doesn't always happen.
My Dad is a veteran, though not disabled. And sometimes he feels trying to work with the VA hospitals is useless, because they're so slow and never seem to have their paperwork in order.
I think the main issue is money. The VA benefits need more money to take care of our aging veterans. But trying to get money from Congress for these men is almost impossible, the bunch of penny pinchers that want to pour money into a welfare system that doesnt' work but won't hardly lift a finger to help our vets.

The Veterans affairs is doing a good job despite of the small amount of money they get from the annual budget. Medications are pretty much generic brands. And, if the VA does not carry the kind of medicine you need, it has to be approved by a board. Most of the professionals treat the veterans good. People who work the front desk are mostly mean and insensitive.

I work at a VA hospital and our vets get top notch care! The VA budget has not been cut (someone mentioned that, and its a lie). The VA that I work at is always adding improvements. Our facility just got a multi-million dollar upgrade. I rarely hear disgrunted vets. We have lots of Vets who just come to the VA everyday to sit around and talk about old times, and reminise with their buddies. The VA system here in the U.S. is by no means perfect, but what healthcare system is?

Its certainly not a perfect system here, alot of vets have to wait an awful long time to recieve the benefits they have earned. So I guess in short, the U.S System is ok, could be better.
PS. And I agree Kye, I get excellent care at the Oklahoma City VA Hospital. I keep hearing horror stories but so far from me, experiances have all been positive.

Like one person said, our VA system isn't perfect, but they do well with what they have, considering. As far as the comment of 'many are homeless' vets...ANYONE can buy a fatigue jacket with some patches and CLAIM to be a vet. So, those bums on the street with those army clothes on are not necessarily vets.

Our veterans are not taken care of like they should be, many are homeless. The VA does not take care of you like they should but it's an endless cycle where there are not enough people who want to change it.
