I don't think it's so much instinct as it is body language. Some examples:
-Posture and relation to how the arms and hands move with the upper torso. For example, a confident man will walk with a straight back and/or SLIGHT puffy chest. Too puffy is too macho. His arms look natural when he stands and walks, not posed. If his hands are in his pocket, two look desperate, but only one hand in the pocket exudes confidence, cause he has a free hand to use for well... whatever guys do... holding stuff, hand gestures, hand shaking, etc.

-Smiling naturally... Some guys don't have perfect teeth cause of unfortunate childhood accidents. I knew this guy whose front teeth were shattered with a baseball when he was a kid. They put them back together but he never liked to smile. It bugged me and i told him he should just smile... If he didn't want to fix them, then deal with what he had. He did jut that... found the girl of his dreams and married her!!!

-Admitting to being wrong (but ONLY whenyou're Actually wrong). It takes cojones to really look into yourself and admit to things you were wrong about and also apologize if applicable) BUT without looking soft or whipped... Admit cause you KNOW you're wrong and NOT cause a girl says you are and you want to end an argument.

-Conversation topics and how you handle a debate. Confident men don't always talk about guy stuff or JUST politics. Mix it up!!! And when talking about controversial things or something that another person is clearly onthe other side about: LISTEN and talk about why you feel otherwise. DO NOT get defensive or use derogatory words to describe ANYTHING!!! A confident man will listen to the other opinion, respect it and still be able to have an opinion and opposing point of view.

There's so much really... Ask a girl close to you or just pick up or borrow anyone's chick magazines. They cover this stuff very in depth. Good Luck!!!

Boost his ego with compliments or sweet gestures like hugs for no real reason or quickly kissing his neck when pulling away from a hug. Or act really impressed with something he does. Something small or stupid making a basket playing basketball.
If he gets cocky and jokes about how awesome he is then he's probably conceded. If he acts no different, or thanks you when you compliment him then he's confidant but not over the top. And if just acts depressed or blows off a compliment or gesture then he's not very confident.

To be honest, I just observe. Does he go out and introduce himself to others that he doesn't know? Is he willing to take appropriate risks? Just observe his behavior when he is around you and others. Does he display a confident demeanor? Does he treat others well (this shows confidence and not arrogance. This is a big thing for me in seeing if he is confident or not)? Can he help others feel at ease around him? How good is he at conversing with others? Those who I know who I view as appropriately confident have these traits.
