My friends insurance is giving us the run around on filing the claim, her window was shattered and my laptop, my son's PSP and several games DVD's and music CD's were stolen out of her car and she has full coverage on this car.But why does the insurance people say that the items stolen were not hers so they don't have to reimburse me and why home owners insurance and not auto.We were out of state no where near home I just want my stuff replaced and I have all the serial numbers and receipts of the high dollar items and we filed a police report right when it happened.

Your property is covered by the off-premises theft cover of your own homeowner or tenant insurance policy. If you do not have such a policy your goods are gone, period. It is not covered by your friend's auto policy, and would not be covered by your own auto policy if you were in your own car. It would also not be covered by your friend's home or tenant policy. The auto insurance company is not giving you the run-around, they are stating policy. And don't get a lawyer, he will listen to the story, tell you the same thing, and maybe bill you for the time.

Most of the answers you’re getting here are correct. Your friends insurance is not obligated to pay for your personal items stolen from her car be it her auto insurance or Homeowners/Rental Policy and neither is she. Now if you have your own Homeowners/Rental Policy you might have some off premises coverage but it would be very limited in this situation. If you have the aforementioned you need to read the policy or consult your agent.

I still have a hard time understanding why people leave valuables open to public view in there cars or even leave them in there cars period? I know that I constantly read, hear or see where someone has had there valuables taken from a car on just about a daily basis. Police are constantly advising against leaving this stuff out for public display. Remember the only thing between that Expensive lap top with all of its irreplaceable Data and a crook is a thin piece of safety glass and 2 minutes or less (it would take that long just for people to notice that the car alarm has gone off). I’m sorry for your loss but as another person said, you may have just learned a very expensive lesson and hiring an attorney on this will not help you further in this cause but rather cost you more.

Since you do have all serial numbers and such for the stolen Items the police might be able to recover some of it, but I would not hold my breath.

Once again good luck and sorry to have such bad news for you, but hopefully you will not repeat this?

Take care always.

They may not have to reimburse you for the items in the veh because they did not belong to there insd. It would be under homeowners because there not part of the car. Even if her radio would have been stolen, if it wasn't factory then that would be home owners. Basically anything put into a veh that is aftermartket is not covered under auto, most likely home owners. Unless of course you bought the veh that way, then it wouldn't be after market stuff, cuz you purchased it that way.. My advice file a claim under your own home owners insurance, if you have it, and let your insurance company subrogate against other partys insurance..

Auto insurance covers the car, homeowners insurance covers your building and all the stuff you own(contents). You can't cover an auto on homeowners and you can't cover contents on auto (unless you buy additional coverage for certain very specific items). But, on your homeowners because there are limitations on electronic equipment, sound reproducing devices & CDs, tapes, etc items stolen from vehicles. The insurance only covers the named insured for property - her homeowners policy will cover her contents and your homeowners policy covers your contents. That is just the way it is in insurance. So, the best thing to do is to report this to your insurance because hers is not going to respond to you.

Items that are not actually part of the car itself, like your laptop, PSP games, etc. are personal property. Personal property is covered under your homeowners or renters policy.

It doesn't matter if it was stolen from someone's car or off your kitchen table, the policy that covers your personal property is your homeowners or renters policy.

The insurance co. is not giving you the run around at all. Auto policies do not cover stolen personal property and that property was yours, not your friends so your insurance would cover your property, not hers.

Why would they reimburse you? First off.. the car owner isnt even at fault the vandal is. Second.. it is CAR insurance. not personal property insurance. car insurance only covers the car. What if someone kept their diamond collections in their car? you just think insurance should cover anything in the car? Maybe you learned an expensive lesson about keeping valuables in the car. Lawyer or not.. your not getting anything....

Automotive comprehensive (in the U.S.) does NOT cover stolen items that are not part of the vehicle. Your friend's homeowners insurance MAY cover some aspect of this but don't count on it. Do YOU have homeowners ins? If so, then contact them and see if any of this is covered.
P.S. -- to the idiots that are advising you to get a lawyer -- shut the hell up.

You probably need her to look at her car policy to see what it says about vandalism. Her policy should have a clause in there that states what they cover and don't. My sister-in-law had bought groceries and had them in the trunk of the car when she was rear ended the guy that hit her his insurance had to cover her groceries as well as the car because everything was broke or torn open or smashed. Insurances don't want to cover nothing these days. And since it was her car then it should be her insurance to pay weather it's car or homeowner. If you still get the run around then you need to hire a lawyer .try calling your own insurance first and tell them you just want to ask a question. They will tell you who it should be to pay for your stuff. They'll ask you if you want them to help but don't let them unless all else fails. It will make your insurance go up if they do.

Car insurance does not cover the contents of your car, only the value of the car itself. I know it sounds weird, but it's true!
