Ok, my therapist is going to start EMDR treatment sessions next week, and I'm still seeking a little more information on it... I am receiving it because I have an extreme phobia of the dark, and even just closing my eyes, which prevents me from sleeping even an hour at night... It has been nearly a whole year without sleep for me now, and the only time I actually sleep is if I have someone sit right next to me, during the day. Which I still only get around a half hour, or an hour at the most... But I am wondering about the reasons she would be using it because I hear that it is mainly for people with traumatic pasts. Please let me know your thoughts!

Thanks!

I am wondering what did happen in your past to cause such a phobia. How many years has this been going on with you. Something had to happen to make you fear the dark. Where you locked in a closet by a sibling or friend, or just some dark place where something horrible happened, and you do not remember the horrible part just the dark. It has to be in your past, something happened to make you this way. I know you could not have been born this way, so childhood, or when it did happen and you need to find out so you can get on with your life and sleep normal again. I wish you the best, and please do more research on EMDR and its side effects.

I was greatly benefited by just one EMDR session. I had not dreamed for 15yrs. As it was explained to me, the action of my eyes following the moving lights, mimicked the rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep that I had been missing for years. The action of my eyes going rhythmically from right to left to right assisted my brain to "re-set" much like you would re-set a clock.
This is a treatment that does not require medication. I found it to be very effective, and its effects have stayed with me for a number of years now.

i dont know how your tharapist explainded it to me when i needed it for and assult that happened to me...she said that when people sleep outr eyes go back and forth and that helps us process things and so the emdr has a dot that goes back and forth and it helps us think through...as you do it she will ask you questions and then have you look at it agian... i find that is just relaxes me to move my eyes back and forth. good luck and if u have anymore questions u really should ask your tharapist that is wut they r there for...
