First off, your passport should show the stamp for the visa you were admitted under and the expiration date (the I-94 card will also show your visa status expiration date).

The best source of information for matters of immigration law are the USCIS.gov and ICE.gov websites. I suggest a good starting point is http://www.ice.gov/sevis/students/index.htm to help you determine your current status (have you not reviewed the contractual documentation upon which your J visa is based? That should provide you with the information you need).

As far as a gree card, bear in mind that part of the J visa is the two-year non-residency requirement (you use the education you receive in the US to help improve your own country for at least two years), after which you can apply for an employment-based immigration visa or a family-based immigration visa.
However, the two-year non-residency requirement can, in some cases, be waived, but the circumstances involving waiverability are too complex to offer advice in this forum (for example, are you privately or government sponsored? If government sponsored, does the sponsoring government have a J-visa waiver policy in place? Has the US State Department made an administrative decision involving waiverability for your particular sponsor? and so on).

So, even if you find yourself able to meet all other requirements for either an employment-based or family-based visa, you may need to reside outside the US for the requisite two years before gettting an immigration visa.
