I went to buy new rotors for the front brakes on my 1996 Ford Escort and the parts guy wanted to know if they were 10 1/4 inch or 9 1/4 inch rotors. Short of taking the wheels off and measuring, is there some way to know what size I need?

if you have the stock wheels on it, and they are 14" you have the 10 1/4. if you have the 13" you have the 9 1/4. if you dont have the stock wheels on it, i believe 94+ 'gt's have 10 1/4 and the 'lx's have 9 1/4
there is a discussion that goes into detail about this on http://www.feoa.net (ford escort owners of america)

The simple answer is no, you must take off a front wheel and measure the rotor or disassemble one side and bring in to the parts store. The bottom line is to ensure you get the right part for your car and all the information needed to do the job right. Also do a check of your tools, and supplies like brake fluid, shop towels, hand cleaner, etc etc also brake cleaner. and nitril gloves are a must to remove the preservative coating on the new rotors. When you finish you'll be happy to have done a job yourself and saved a ton of cash.Best of Luck, Michael T.
