They are indeed the same element, but they are in different forms.

Your body will utilize the nutrients in the food it eats and break it down into the components it needs most.

This includes metals like Magnesium, Iron, and Copper and other elements like Phosphorus, Oxygen, Carbon, Hydrogen and so on...

The neat thing is that your body is able to extract these chemicals from almost any food that it can digest - Humans are Omnivores, so we can eat just about anything and our gut will do the rest for us.

It sure makes it simpler than having to find these elements running around by themselves and chomping them down!

This is a hard one to explain....
if a food is fortified with Iron - then yes, they have added metal shavings. How do I know? well, in Nutritional Biochem we took total cereal and water then put it in a centerfuge to break it down and you could see the iron (it sticks together once it is seperated from the cereal and forms grains like sand)
Iron that naturally occurs in plants, like raisins and spinach gets there when the plant sucks up iron from the soil it was grown in - some plants have a greater affinity for doing this than others. That iron is then bound with other elements in the plant (such as magnesium or sodium) and stored in the leafs, or roots. .
Iron in things like beef....those cows are eating plant material that contains iron, and it is stored in the animals body (us too) in the red blood cells.
