i have a retainer type device for my TMJ. i was told to soak it in bleach every 2 weeks. i probably do that once a month. after that i soak it in mouthwash and brush it with a toothbrush to get rid of the bleach taste. it comes up nice and clean without any of the nasty white stuff!

Go get your teeth cleaned and take it with you - it sounds like calculs (tarter). The dental hygienist will be able to remove it for you, you won't be able to get it off yourself. Once she gets it off and it's clean again, you should brush it every time you brush your teeth. Soaking it in bleach is not a good idea, if it has metal on it, it will eventually corrode and it is bleach after all. As for the hot water, it's not a good idea either b/c it can distort it. Warm water is okay - but not HOT.

A solution of hot water and vinegar works as well.
