My husband is getting into that too. He was telling me that they should work well, but it all depends on how you want your guitar to feel and look. He said oak can be too heavy, and that's why he doesn't like Gibson. If you're staining your guitar I wouldn't reccomend two different woods, but if you're painting it, then it should be fine. Like he said, it all depends on how you want it to feel.

Yes, they'll work fine.

You may want to consider using a different wood than walnut, like mahogany, or if you are putting a solid color finish on it I actually like the sound of yellow poplar.

Danielle's hubby is a little off, in that Gibsons primary wood is mahogany, not oak. In fact, I know of nobody that uses oak. Guitars are not stained... they have a clear sealer put on them, then a tinted clear coat, then clear coats on that. NEVER stain a guitar if you can help it.

Other common body woods are ash (kinda looks like oak), alder, basswood (yuck), mahogany, maple, and sapele (plantation grown mahogany).

I still have the first electric I ever built, in 1978, made out of pine. We are now up to #12735.

Good luck!

Be careful, there's a lot of strings attatched to the job.
