OK I see most of the answers are saying that nothing happens...SO what if you are wrong and Christians are right? That would mean that atheists would go to hell right? If atheists were right, christians would just cease to exist...

And if christians ceased to exist how would it hurt them where as going to hell according to the Christian faith(which we're hypothetically all agreeing is right , right now) would totally suck?

Yes, I'm springing Pascals Wager on you...but I'm not forcing you to except it. I just thought I would present it to gather information on your arguments against it. I really appreciate it. Thanks

Nothing... same thing as before we were born... it will be peace... no heaven, no hell... we just cease to exist.

I have no beliefs in that regard. Though it seems likely, given the fact that the mind IS the brain, that when our brain ceases to function, we cease to be.
But I, unlike theists, refuse to just jump to conclusions.
G** D*** Pascal's Wager again! Who's got the booze?
Pascal's Wager only works if you assume there are two possible choices. Christianity and Atheism, and both are more or less equally likely. The reality of the fact is that there are thousands of religions in this world. Only a few of them have a concept of Hell, and Christianity is but one. If you assume all possibilities are equally likely, then choosing christianity makes you only a tiny bit less likely to burn than an atheist.
But that's not what really kills the Wager. If there are thousands of religions out there, all only having an infintesmal chance of being the TRUE religion, then we can safely assume that they are ALL false. If 99.999% of religions are man-made human lies, then aren't they all lies?
One last point, any God who would put humanity in this situation is clearly sick, twisted and EVIL. I'm not worshipping an evil god, no matter what he threatens me with.

I am not an Atheist although I sympathize with them as I am a Gnostic and we have also been scrutinized by Christians for centuries..what happens is we go back to the fourth dimension where we all come from and live forever in a perfect environment, life is just a school for our souls growth and to experience for the static all knowing God. If we want to live another life (most have several dozen already) we come back in with a newly written chart, there are no sins because we choose ALL our experiences and the only close to the Christian discription of "hell" is Earth.

I think that upon death, the electro-chemical activity of the brain ceases, and the personality ceases with it. The body slowly, inexorably returns to its constituent elements and the self is no more.
As long as we're playing "what if:" What if there were a giant spider in the center of the earth, weaving a web and thereby causing the earth to spin?

Ho hum. Is this one of those once-a-day questions?
With the cessation of brain function, your conciousness ceases permanently. After you die, your body is cremated or rots in the ground, and is eventually recycled into new organisms.
Caveats:
1. This is my opinion, and mine only.
2. No one knows for sure, as nobody's ever come back to tell us, and there's no evidence of any afterlife to draw on.

Uh oh, now you gone and done it! Do you have *any* idea how many times per *day* people spring Pascal's wager on us?
Come on back in, everybody. Time for another round.

That's it, you die. Game over, end of story, do not pass go do not collect $200.
And, I am cool with that.
*Added*
Drink up everyone. That last comment threw is a little Pascal's Wager as a late inning curve.

the next step after death is the 2nd coming of Jesus when he raises the dead. and the follower of Christ are taken to heaven. there is no after life, unless u are talkin about with Jesus. but if you die, u dont go directly to heaven or hell. that is what takes place at the end of time
in the bible it say that the dead know nothing.
Psalms-146:4... His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.
Eccl- 3:20... All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.
Eccl-12: 7... Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
but the spirit that goes to God is not our cocious spirit, therefore we can't experience heaven like u see on tv. the bible says that ghost are devils performing miracles to decieve people. i hope this helps

how can we expect to understand death when we cant understand life?- Confucius
People wonder what will happen to them when they die, yet they do not know how to conduct their lives. Before wondering whether a a dead tree might flower, we should find out why it is that a living tree should flower
