Yes it is absolutely safe to eat,truly speaking is not really a member of the spinach family, tastes like spinach so perhaps referred to as spinach,other names are Malabar or ceylon spinach & many other names depending on the country where it is grown,has thick fleshy leaves with a bit of a crinkle to it,mucilage seen on cutting & cooking,so is good to use in soups for thickening.
