you know.. the side where they write your name & fill out the little squares...?
what is supposed to be filled in on those squares?
for example on of them says: shots.
what else are on the rest?

As far as what is filled out on this this is where they note if you want your coffee beverage decaf, how many shots of espresso, do you want flavored syrup like torani vanilla, what kind of milk (soy, regular, non-fat), custom can be things like extra hot, and drink would be things like mocha, latte, espresso etc.

it is like the shorthand that people use in the resturant business.

the boxes on the side of your cup is for marking purposes to specify what type of drink to how do you want your drink to be prepared. you could say it is a communication method between the barista that took your order and the one who will prepare your drink.

ordering a drink may begin with whether or not the drink is iced (this usually can be differentiate between plastic cup for cold drinks and paper cup for hot drinks), whether it is decaffeinated, the number of shots of espresso (if different from the standard recipe for that drink -1 shot for tall, 2 shots for both grande and venti), any flavoring added (usually the type of syrup), the kind of milk requested, (non-fat milk, organic milk, breve, heavy cream, or soy milk), any additional customizations (no foam, extra hot) and finally the name of the beverage.

for example, the order of an iced latte, grande, with vanilla syrup, decaf, with whipped cream, skimmed milk, and an extra shot, would be called as an "Iced Decaf Triple Grande Vanilla Non-fat (or Skim) with whip latte."
