Here's a neat idea you should try. Paint on top of old paintings. I buy up really bad oil paintings from yard and garage sales and paint my work over top of them. For starters, you can't get blank canvas that cheap anywhere else! The texture from the under (dried) paint stays there but adds to my painting and the colour gives me great ideas as well as I paint.

For texture, visit the paint section of the Home Depot for ceiling popcorn, either in a spray can or dry bag...or better, go to the builder's section and look for such things as vinyl conrete patch, drywall topping compound, and anything else that might be "paint" able.. I even use tin cans smashed down, packing peanuts, onion net bags, PVC pipe....go beyond the expensive artstore mediums if you really want textures. All mix well with acrylic paints. Good gloppy jars of acrylic paint. There are also additives that you can get to thicken paint. Go to Jerry's Artarama website and peruse the wonderful jars of acrylics that are so thick you can put them an inch thick on a support with a knife or spoon if you like. Enjoy!

Though also you might search amazon.com for books on textured artwork.
