It is most likely a three-way selector switch marking where you can choose - manual operation, off, automatic operation.

you are probably looking at a motor starter setup and as previously stated it is for hand, off, or automatic operation. The hand position will probably start the motor and leave it on until turned off. The off position is self explanitory. The Automatic position means the motor or device is also controlled by other switches, possibly level switches, pressure switches, limit switches or whatever.
