This is a revised reply ; so pls disregard only the poor rating. Usually a hypoactive thyroid is associated to obesity or unexplained gain in weight ; increased difficulty in losing weight, chronic fatique syndrome and slow metabolism. . So it's unsual that you are losing weight when your thyroid is underactive. Most likely, you have an overactive or hyperactive thyroid.
Hyperactive or overactive thyroid gland will account for the fast metabolic rate and lost of weight. Thyroid hormone (TSH) regulates a person’s metabolism. Too much hormone causes a person to be hyperactive, feel nervous, warm, hungry, and often lose weight. Too little hormone causes a person to slow down, feel tired and gain weight
Carbohydrates can be "simple," high-glycemic carbohydrates such as pasta, bread, sugar, white flour and cakes, or "complex" lower-glycemic carbohydrates, like vegetables and whole grains.
Some people simply eat too many carbohydrates. Today's low-fat diets emphasize more and more pasta, bagels, Snackwells, and sugary fat-free products, and most of these are high-glycemic carbohydrates. Basic over-consumption of high-glycemic foods carbohydrates can also trigger insulin resistance and overweight
Insulin Resistance and Thyroid Disease
It seems likely that hypothyroidism, with its penchant for slowing down everything else in our systems right down to our cells, slows down our body's ability to process carbohydrates and our cell's ability to absorb blood sugar. Hence, the carbohydrates we could eat pre-thyroid problems now are too much for our systems to handle. So excess carbohydrates equals excess insulin equals excess weight. Plus, the fun side effects of blood sugar swings (tiredness, dizziness, fatigue, exhaustion, hunger, etc.) that we may be mistaking as thyroid symptoms and our doctors say can't possibly be.
Things you can do about thyroid malfunction:
If you notice any of these symptoms, visit your healthcare provider for an examination. The diagnosis of hypothyroid and hyperthyroidinclude a history (your family and health history may place you at risk), physical examination, and key thyroid function tests. Sometimes, an ultrasound or the thyroid gland may also be ordered. There are treatments for each of these diseases. Follow your entire healthcare provider's instructions regarding laboratory testing for your disease, and follow up care depending on the results. .
Try to exercise.this is the most inexpensive therapy. Make a daily walk alone, or with a friend or family member a part of your routine. Even low intensity exercise such as light or brisk walking or aerobic activity may help you to promote the flow of oxygen in your lungs and blood (oxygenation), and make you feel better.
Follow a good diet. In general, increase your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. Limit your intake of fats. Eat carbohydrates (such as sugars and pastas) and other high- glycemic carbohydrates in moderation.
Make sure you tell your doctor, as well as all healthcare providers, about any other medications you are taking (including over-the-counter, vitamins, or herbal remedies). These can cause interactions with other medications.
Remind your doctor or healthcare provider if you have a history of diabetes, liver, kidney, or heart disease.
Keep yourself well hydrated. Drink two to three quarts of fluid every 24 hours, unless you are instructed otherwise.
If you experience symptoms or side effects of your disease or therapy, especially if severe, be sure to discuss them with your health care team. They can prescribe medications and/or offer other suggestions that are effective in managing such problems.
If you lost a great deal of weight or expeienced muscle wasting; you may benefit from adding extra calories and proteins to your diet. Also, because hyperthyroidism may contribute to thining bones, it's impt to get enough calcium (1200 mgm from foods or calcium supplements) to prevent osteoporosis.
The Thyroid Diet discusses optimal dietary changes, including how a thyroid sufferer should focus on a low-glycemic, high-fiber, lower-calorie diet, optimal timing of meals for maximum hormonal impact, thyroid-damaging foods to avoid, helpful herbs and supplements such as green tea and coconut oil.
Check the book by Mary Solomon. which contains several different eating plans, food lists, and a set of delicious and healthy gourmet recipes. With handy worksheets to use in weight loss tracking, and a special resource section featuring websites, books, and support group. ,
You'll also find vital help for thyroid patients dealing with weight problems. via the internet's most popular thyroid disease websites, www.thyroid-info.com, and thyroid.about.com.
I used to have hyperthyrodism. Now, post isotopes tx, I reverted to hypothyroidism and am now on Synthroid oral meds. I have problems with CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome ). It's a constant battle to lose weight and maintain it.
A Dr. once told me and my sis who also has hyperthyroidism that it's better to tx it.... rather than hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism can cause several complications including high cholesterol and trigycerides; diabetes and fluid around the heart;etc. . It prevents the body to utilize the stored fats to convert it to energy. Therefore, the excess levels of carbohydrates create excess insulin, and thus, gain in weight.
When I had hyperthroidism, I never had to worry about what I eat for fear of gaining weight.
So, be comforted with this thought...... your problem to gain weight has a better success rate than the problem .... to lose weight.
