I just found out that someone very close to me is very intolerant of other religions, even other denominations of his own religion. How do you deal with this? I'm all about tolerance, so this is strange for me.

Love that person and lead by example. If are intolerant of your friend you will become just like him in a sense. This may be one time to use a favorite fundamentalist line "love the sinner hate the sin". You can not force a person to evolve and enlightenment happens in stages. We all still have a lot to learn, most definitely including myself. Peace be with you

I try not to talk about religion with those people - and if it comes up, I become very vague, with a lot of smiling and nodding.

I know a few people like that. I just try to avoid talking about religon when I'm with those people. You could try talking sense to them, but I doubt it would work. Still, maybe they'll come to realize that sometime when they get to know others more.

if you truly love them you will have to confront them with it. Tolerance doesn't mean letting people get away with bigotry.
