I recently had surgery and was given Vicodin for the pain. It didn't work any better than anything over-the-counter, so my Dr. prescribed Darvocet and it worked much better.

I think they're a combination of drugs?? I can't take Tylenol with codeine because it makes me sick. So the Dr. tried the others.

I guess I'm just wondering why one would be prescribed over the other. Just curious :)

The first two answers are more correct however the third answer is way off of base.in the opiate family darvocet whos active agents are tylenol(apap) and propyphene.is more like a butterknife,it is a very very weak sythetic narcotic.where as vicodin -lortab- is hydrocodone with tylenol(apap) in dosages raning from 5 mg of hydrocodone up to 10mg.is more like a steakknife knife.and percoset wich is oxycodone and apap is like a bowie knife.and oxycontin wich is a slow release high concentration of pure oxycodone is like a sword.

Darvocet Ingredients

The difference between the two meds are th ingredients. Darvocet has propoxyphene, and vicodin has hydrocodone. They are both in a class of drugs called narcotic analgesics.
Each drug effects everyone differently. What may work good for you may not work good for me and vice versa. Both are very addicting, and controlled by venders.

Feel free to ask any specific questions if you may have.

Darvocet is a combination of acetaminophen and propoxyphene, Vicoden is a combination of hydrocodone and acetaminophen. They are both analgesics, but are different compositions. Some drugs just work better with some people than others.

Vicodin is a moderate pain killer with acetaminophen. While Darvocet is a mild pain killer with acetaminophen that also causes a little euphoria. The euphoric effect may have been what made it work better for you.

They are two different drugs...here's Darvocets pharm name(PROPOXYPHENE NAPSYLATE WITH ACETAMINOPHEN - ORAL). And here is Vicodins(HYDROCODONE/ACETAMINOPHEN - ORAL). they are both narcotics, jut depends on the strength of the RX.
