I just got two new puppies. One is a half shih-tzu half chihuahua, and the other is a german shepard. They both need to get surgery or else they will get their periods and stain my carpet. My shih-tzu/chihuahua is about 5 months old now, and my german shepard is about 3 months old. When should they get surgery? Soon?

Now is an excellent time to get your Chihuahua x Shih Tzu spayed. You can either do it at the vet clinic, which costs around $150 - $250 or you can do it at your local SPCA/Humane Society for around $70. I would wait another month to get your GSD spayed.

Just wondering, if you care about your carpet so much, why have a dog? What happens when they have an accident on the carpet or they get sick and vomit? That will stain the carpet and there isn't much that can get the stain out.

Your 5 month old dog should be done soon, she could go into heat at anytime. Which isn't just about staining your carpets, unlike humans dogs go into heat while they can bleed during this time they can GET pregnant during the heat cycle (unlike a human who has a period when her body sheds the lining of the uterous because she isn't pregnant).

So, your dogs will live longer there is no risk of uterine infection or cancer if you get them fixed. I would make an appointment at the vet as soon as possible, then you can speak withe the vet about doing your german shephard who should be scheduled soon after. It will prevent a big hassle and possibly your dogs trying to get out while they are in heat to go breed. A lot of dogs are lost during this time.

Now is a good time, but it does depend on the vet some will do it as early as 2 months. The best thing you can do is call your vet and find out when he thinks it is the best time.
BTW dogs do not get periods they go into heat or estrus.

The usual is about 5-6 months. Some vets will do it earlier. Your mix is ready any time, but you may want to hold off on your other one for a few months, because it can be hard to find a vet who will agree to do it that early.

Most vets like to spay smaller dogs between 4-6 months old. With larger dogs it's usually a little later, like 8 months, to let their cartilage develop more in their joints (it's a hormone thing). I'd ask your vet what they think. It's important to spay your dogs before their first heat cycle to decrease the chance of breast cancer when they're older.

The best age is about three to four months (ring your vet and ask). I'd be interested in the dogs names - such different sized dogs. I'm sure they'll grow up to the best of friends.
Good luck.

The earliest age you can spay your dogs is at 5 months old, at least with small dogs that is. I'm sure if your looking to spay your dogs, you vet will make sure your dog is the right age, my vet did.
