"closed captions
Textual notations for the deaf at the bottom of the screen of TV programs and DVDs. Unlike foreign subtitles, which are created for people who can hear but not understand the spoken language, closed captions must include text that describes periodic background noises such as a barking dog, a sudden, loud noise from a vehicle or a gunshot."
I hope it helps.

Closed captioning is something on the TV that is usually used to help people who are hard of hearing watch TV. They are called "subtitles" in the UK.

Closed captioning is subtitles on the screen for the hearing impaired. You have to turn that feature on in your television in order to see the sub titles.
