It's not like that at all,you've got it wrong,you make the batter the right size to fit the fish.

They have a machine that the fish travel down and when it reaches the correct batter plate it deposits the fish into the preformed batter receptacle and WHOLA! Battered fish!

you dip the fish into the batter. even if it's the shape of a heart, a star or a square... you don't need a knife either.

they have this new invention...it is called a knife...when pressed against the fish it causes it to separate into the desired size
