So we have no way of knowing what breed was used in this allergy test. If we look for a hypo-allergenic dog along with an air purifier, I am willing to bet that my wife won't suffer any ofr minimal allergic reactions. But she NOW feels after testing at a positive "4" that ANY breed of dog will make her ill.
HELP....I NEED TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO TALK HER INTO GIVING "MAN'S BEST FRIEND" A TRY @ OUR HOUSE

There is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog, but their are breeds that are usually produce less dander than others. I would try finding someone that has a dog that is one of the breeds that you are considering and offer to doggie sit for a week or so to see how it goes.

I tested allergic to dogs (blood test, I think I was a 2 or 3), but I have 6 dogs and have no problems. Yes I have to take a prescription every day, but it is more for outdoor allergies. I do sleep with an air purifier in my room, and my doc says not to let my dogs sleep in bed with me (but I do anyway). I also bathe them every two weeks to keep the dander down.

May I suggest that instead of giving "man's best friend" a try at your house, see if you have any friends/family/acquaintances that have a dog of any breed that you might consider. She might be much more open to spending time at another person's house with a dog than bringing one into your own home, and risk keeping any possible allergens around for a while.

I hate to tell you that if this test comes back positive, it does not descriminate about what types of breeds she will be allergic too. I am allergic to them all. It is the dog dander that is caused from the dog licking themself, and the proteins that is in the saliva and urine. If she is licked it can also cause swelling and itching. You need to be sympathetic to her problem, as this could trigger off asthma attacks even if she has never had one before in her life. She also would be bothered by sinus and allergic rhinitis with swelling and itching of her eyes. It is miserable to have an allergy. This is not something to play with. It is very serious.

I have a dog. so i do care for dogs. but in your question the option is to choose between "A DOG?" and/or your "wife". I would go for the wife. and give up the dog. hope it helps.
ps. come on man -- this is no joke --although i made it sound like that. be serious and go for the woman. do not hesitate either.

If you can talk her into a dog, Shihtzus are hypo-allergenic and don't shed much.
