Check with your local volunteer center. There are a lot of different fun volunteer activities in your local community that can be one-time, short-term, or long-term.

Through my volunteer center, I tutor kids at the library, help visitors at the museum, play with the children at the local shelter, pack food at the food bank, clean our parks, and mentor youth.
There's all sorts of things you can do, and the volunteer centers pre-screen projects, and help you find something that will work best for you.

check the internet. im sure there is a service in your area that is doing some kind of "display" thing right now. when i was 17, i had to do some, so i did it filling up balloons at the mall for the ambulance people. easy money, baby!

Go around asking people if you can do some housework, clean up their yard, etc. You can even make it a group date.
