As a volunteer at my regional animal safe haven, I've treated a satisfactory deal of Pitbulls. Yes, they're physically robust (think of the lean muscle they bring), and can be rough to handle and manipulate in the event that they lack training and socialization. In the event you do get a Pit, be certain he is acquired basic manners and does not prove too aggressive (you do not need a dog that can not be walked down the street). Anyway, there is a stigma to having a Pitbull (most men and women are frightened of them, the media likes to report Pitbull assaults, and a few residence coverage organizations is not going to insure you if in case you have a PIt). This mentioned, be in charge with something dog you get.

OMG are you kidding me?? DO NOT LET YOUR ANIMAL NOT MEET OTHER PEOPLE!!!! Pits that are not socialized are the ones most likely to bite, because like all animals, they are scared of what they don't know. I have a 90lb male and he has been properly socialized and I trust him completely around strangers, other pets, even my 9mo. daughter. But I had someone jump into my backyard one night and try to break into the house. My 90lb "Doc" jumped over a 6 foot fence and chased the intruder halfway down the block before he caught him and just pinned him down a growled at him. No barking, no biting, just pinning and growling. Now that is a good guard dog. Held him there until the police showed up. So in answer to your question, Yes they are great guard dogs, but DO NOT raise them in solitary confinement because that will only teach them to become aggressive to everyone, humans and animals alike. Good luck and positively promote the pit bulls and bully breeds. DO NOT turn your pit into a statistic!!

Now this one is a whopper! Pit Bulls actually make completely useless guard dogs - because of their love of all things human, they will consider strangers as friends as much as they consider family as friends.
The only way in which the Pit Bull makes a good guard dog is through its appearance and its much maligned reputation, which is not a good reason to get one. Though, in the past, they have been linked with disreputable people, such as drug dealers, this should not reflect on the dog. If a Pit Bull has a natural love of people, consider what these grotesques of human beings had to do to these dogs to make them aggressive.
A Pit Bull can be happy one minute and turn on you the next
I have personally come across this myth more than once. What you have to remember is that what most people are doing is regurgitating what they have seen on the television or read in the newspaper. Very few of them have actually been in contact with one of these dogs, so you have to forgive them for not being educated about the breed.
This particular gem is also completely untrue. A happy, well-loved and well-adjusted Pit Bull will no more turn on his owner for no reason than the average teenager will hack up his family with a meat cleaver. Strong image, I know, but effective!
A dog has to be watched for any physical or psychological changes. Dogs cannot talk to us, so we have to make sure that we keep an eye on them to evaluate them for any potential illness.

As a cruelty investigator, I deal mostly with the pit bull and rottweiller breeds. I must first off say that if your intention is to get a pit bull merely because of its "guard dog ability," you should not be getting an animal.
Pit Bull Terriers are very observant dogs. What their reaction is to intruders in the property depends on how they are treated by the family that takes them in.

Pitbulls are very very sweet loving dogs they only look mean because of what people say about them.Yes the dog will more than likely scare away an intruder...most of them have a watchdog bloodline...And have viscious barks...I have two and a liter of pups on the way by the end of the week...

Properly treated and bred Pits love people as much as Labs do. I have only heard bad things from people who "train" their Pits to be guard dogs. I would not recommend it. That's how they get their bad rep. I do believe if they got a bad vibe from someone or someone was going to hurt you, they would go after that person.(like a lot of other breeds would) Well, I guess one of the only "good" thing about their bad rep is if a person breaks into your house and sees a Pit, they will take off just from the site of it. (Even if it would only lick the person to death) ; )

I have two pits, 1 male 1 female. They are very protective and family oriented but are sweet and friendly. The reputation of pits alone is enough to provide protection because people are generally scared of their breed. When my female is asleep in bed with me and my husband comes home late from work, she will stay in bed with me and be on guard growling until he comes downstairs to "identify" himself and put her at ease. She never leaves my side and I know in my soul that she would die to protect me from harm. By the way, it is how they are raised, not the breed. Mine are great with our kids and all their friends.

No, I raise Pitts an people has given them bad names.
Our pit is nothing but a huge baby, we have 3 cats an he plays with them. He's a lap dog but that is the way we raised him. But I'm not saying that if you went to hurt me i couldn't tell you what he would do.
It really depends on how the pup is raised an what kind of attention it gets.
If you don't show attention, an you miss treat the pup they will defend there self's just like we do.

They are great guard dogs but you need to train them for the correct purpose. Make sure they are friendly with your family but watchful with strangers. Also kee a close eye on pitbulls because they can become aggressive and you don't want a law suit against you if your dog was to attack someone by accident. =O
