I'm not interested in religion really. I am interested in philosophy. The bible is a great philosphy book, and an interesting one to study. The key thing for me is that the bible is nothing more that fiction/philosophy. It wasn't insored by god. It isn't to be taken literally. It's a book.
That goes for all religious writings. Not just the bible.
Another thing is that religion has really shaped mankind, and carried a great dela of influence throughout time. If you really want to understand history, you have to look at religion. There is no way around it. To truly understand history, and the people it describes, one must gain an understanding of their ideology, theology, and things of that nature.
And, debating religion is very interesting in its own right. These are the subject people get fired up about.

For those of us that live in areas where religion is predominant it affects our lives directly. I'm not so much concerned with religion as I am concerned with how we can all find a way to coexist peacefully...part of finding that involves understanding why rational people can hold strange religious beliefs and also understanding why they think others should also hold those beliefs.

why are some historians in love with greek mythology, they dont believe in it?
maybe another reason is that religion is all around us, and whether you like it or not, it is affecting our lives. ie abortion, illegal drugs, ect ect. religious 'morality' is being imposed in our judicial system. it is starring at us when we buy a soda can (in god we trust)... the list goes on...
how about the idea that "we need a man of faith in public office"! freaking ridiculous. when spain gave up their strict adherence to religion the country flourished.
all threw history religion has tried to squash science... they like the toys but they dont want to hear the research that effects their beliefs...

Two reasons....
1. Education
2. Because religion effects everyone whether they want it to or not since people effect one another.

Not to put words in other people's mouths... but religion is so much a part of society's paradigm... it is disgusting and foul and we want it gone. I am no atheist though.
