In terms of psychology... well, the post doesn't have your scent on it, so the dog probably doesn't understand that it belongs to you. It probably has a stranger's scent, plus it is coming from outside into the dog's territory. Maybe the dog considers it a threat, that has to be dealt with somehow. Or maybe it just enjoys chewing on paper and thinks this paper is OK because it smells foreign.
I think you can get holders or boxes to catch the post as it comes through, to keep it out of doggie reach.

Well it's not because it is tasty! Dogs see the mail as something attacking their region so they grab it and rip it apart, thinking they are protecting the area. If you could go to the mail as it is being pushed through the door, you could show your dog how happy you are to receive it. Do this enough and he'll get the picture.
Don't ask me how you can train them to bring the mail or the newspaper to you, let alone your slippers!!!

Because it is something different in their "space" and since it is not there all the time they think they are proctecting. My dog is funny he will let you in the house, but for some reason has a problem with people leaving, if he does not know the person you have to hold him or he bites at them....I know he is strange, but I love him..lol

For one thing, it is an INTRUDER! They have no clue what it is, so they attack it.
Secondly, your dog does not have a 'calm, submissive mind'. Do you ever take it out for walks? Get some good smells in, see the world? Maybe you do, but you need to calm your dog and take control of the situation for him. YOU ARE THE PACK LEADER! SO LEAD YOUR PACK! Watch the Dog Whisperer, too! he da bomb!
