Basic training refers to branches other than the Marine Corps.
Boot Camp refers to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot.
There are only two places Marines are made. Parris Island, SC, and Camp Pendleton, CA. Traditionally, east of the Rockies recruits attend Parris Island. West of the Rockies the recruits go to CA.

Essentially, (there are a few exceptions) the Mississippi River is the dividing line, for the USMC. Marine recruits west of the Mississippi go to MCRD San Diego, in California and are affectionately called "Hollywood Marines"... those Marine recruits living east of the Mississippi go to MCRD Parris Island, in South Carolina.
An interesting thing I learned recently... if you have a family member who attended USMC Boot Camp in California and you would geographically go to South Carolina, you can make a request to attend boot at MCRD San Diego... so you'd graduate from the same facility your relative did.
Oh.. and all female Marine Recruits go to Parris Island.
Other branches of the military? I have no idea...

Are you in the Combat Arms? If so, you will attend One Station Unit Training, which is basic training and AIT all in one place. If you are going infantry, you will go to Fort Benning, Georgia. Armor, you will go to Fort Knox, Kentucky.
Field Artillery, you will go to Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Finally, Combat Engineers and Military Police, you will go to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Any other branch of the army, you will most likely do your basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Hope this helps.

I can only answer for the Marine Corps but as a rule of thumb (there are exceptions) if you are east of the Mississippi you are most likely going to join the sand fleas in PI. If you are West of the Rockies you are going to be a Hollywood Marine. If you are between the Mississippi and the Rockies then it depends on which flight is cheaper. If you are female, you are going to PI no matter where you live.

Army Basic Training is where ever the MOS school is located. For instance, all MP's go to Ft. Leonardwood, MO because AIT is held there.

No, generally they try to put you with other people of similar MOS's. For example, if you have a combat MOS, then you most likely would never go to Fort Jackson. So it is first determined by MOS, then it is determined by openings.
