I was listening to the "Addicted to Race" podcast and the subject had been brought up. So I figured I would ask you guys about it.

Is diversity a key factor in your child's environment? How?

I think diversity is very important for children. It teaches them to appreciate different customs and cultures and at the same time shows them how people of different races are all fundamentally "the same" (ex..we all like peanut butter and jelly for lunch!)

I grew up in a neighborhood that was home to an army base AND an air force base! We had a lot of diversity in our schools as a result. I always had friends who were from different racial backgrounds, and it seemed perfectly normal to me! When I was about 13 I joined a youth group in a town about 30 minutes away. This was a very rural area with very small schools. During the course of conversation, I mentioned a movie I had recently seen with my friend Evelyn. A girl next to me commented that she had never heard that name before and it sounded like a "black person's name" I responded that my friend Evelyn was indeed black. ALL CONVERSATION STOPPED. Everyone was looking at me and one of the kids finally said "you know a REAL black person?" I said "yes" and they asked "What are they like??" I was floored!

Certainly, some exposure to people and ideas different from one's own can be a positive influence on a growing child. Children raised in "closed" environments tend to grow up with "closed" minds. This applies not only to racial and cultural diversity but to a broad range of influences, and is good for the child not only in the moral sense but practically as well, since a child raised to have an open mind will likely be more able to adapt to various circumstances of life.

i don't go out and make friends of different races just so they can be around my kids

i have raised my kids to know there is no difference in people we all look different but that is where the differences stop we are all the same on the inside and what you look like has nothing to do with the kind of person you are

my best friend was born in Spain and now lives in the us her some is 1/2 black and i take care of him all the time he is treated no differently than my own kids when he is here

i have had foster children of different races and they fit in just fine and are treated with as much love and care as all the other children in my home

We live in a predominantly white community but I want my child to grow up to understand that race has nothing to do with what a person is like. The color of a persons skin doesnt matter.
