Yes that's a crime. If you know the property is stolen and purchase it or if you know that the seller intends to steal and tell the seller that you want to buy then the seller steals that is also a crime and could be solicitation. There is a common crime "receiving stolen goods," and another "concealing stolen goods." These crimes require knowledge that the goods were stolen or that the buyer should have known that the goods were stolen.
You should not rush into any accusations because you could alienate your friend but emphasize that you do not think that material things are so important to risk criminal punishment. Be sensitive if it is not her fault what her parents are doing but express your concern that they not get into legal trouble if they keep this up. Maybe you could express concern to return the purse to its rightful owner. your friend may be more interested in her and her parents own well being, however, so you could express concern that they not have criminal charges brought against them.

For genuine LV products, i'm not sure if there's a serial bar code in it.
To my personal understanding and what i felt,
To prove a stolen item such as a bag,
Which LV is common and very much appreciated by women,
It's hard to prove that it's stolen.
And after when your friend sold it to you,
How would one prove that the bag which you are carrying is hers (Stolen) ?
She CAN'T search you nor hold you back in a public area,
Unless she had solid evidence and documents to prove & she need to have a police report.
Oh, an original arrest warrant too with police officers with her.
But i bet, police won't be so free to do such matters as terrorism is their main issue now. Stolen items nomally takes a very long time to resolve and it ends up in vain
(closing of case after 1yr or lesser/more.)
Being ignorant, is the best idea for you if you really like that bag. Cos you won't be liable for anything.
Unless you are talking about a mobile phone which everything individual has a IMEI nbr in it...
Stolen mobiles are a NO NO thing to purchase.
Cheers

There are shops called pawn shops that sell all kinds of items- some of them may be okay while others may be illegal. If you know the item is stolen, obviously, do not buy it! A lot of "Hot" items have cereal numbers and special engraved identification prints on them now so these items are easier to track down. If you bought one of these knowing this, you're going to get yourself in trouble. If you did not know about it, the worst that could happen is that the item could be taken away from you and hopefully you can get your money back.

It is illegal to buy stolen property. Even if you did not know it was stolen when you bought it, you would still be liable. Buying stolen property is a crime in the U.S.

The English law definition of handling stolen goods states:
If otherwise than in the course of stealing, knowing or believing them to be stolen goods he dishonestly receives the goods or dishonestly undertakes or assists in their retention, removal, disposal or realisation by or for the benefit of another or he arranges to do so.
I doubt that USA law is much different but I don't know.

recieving stolen goods is the crime. Knowledge of the fact they were stolen is irrelevant. Although I highly doubt any police officers are going to ask her for a reciept so she is fine. BTW what happened in NYC? BTW - it's probably a fake.
