Wash the potato (no soap please LOL); poke it at least halfway through 2-3 times (depending on size) with a fork. Wrap the potato in Saran Wrap (or similar plastic wrap). This will keep the ends from getting hard and keep the moisture in.
Some microwaves have a potato setting. If not, start with 4 minutes at 100% power. Press the sides to see if potato is soft. If not, cook another 1-2 minutes.
You can squeeze the potato before unwrapping for a fluffier texture.
If you are microwaving one of those large baking potatoes, start with 6 minutes. It's better to undercook and add another minute or two than it is to have a hard potato.

Potatoes take about two to three minutes at full power depending on the power of your microwave. Make sure you poke them so they do not explode too.

Microwave powers can be very different. Mine has a lot of power. If you have a small, low powered microwave it will take longer. I also turn my potatoes over half way through. If you like a crisp peel put them under the broiler on low for just a few seconds on each side. Watch them carefully while doing this. They can burn real fast!

I think the newer micorwaves have a potato button. I would start out with 5 minutes at first. If the fork doesn't go in easily I would probably do it for 2 minutes at a time longer until it's done.
