My dog has mange and the mites have infested in her body and because the vet didn't catch it on time it has weakened her immune system, a tick burrowed in her ear and caused severe inflammation and we had an expensive surgery to fix it and now the other ear is swollen and we aren't sure if it's worth it to have surgery because she is so bad. The vet just gave us a medication that is supose to kill it from the inside out. Will her ear ever heal without surgery? We bathed her in medicated shampoo and we cleaned the house to rid it of the bugs. Now our other dog has it..and he is losing fur now too..WE DON't KNOW WHAT TO DO?

We took her to the same VET FOR OVER A YEAR and they treated it topically..we had no idea what it was. And then we started to get worried and b/c it wasn't getting better we did our own research and came up with mange..and took her to a new vet and they confirmed our findings. SO..it was the vet's fault!!

if your other dog got it, then it must be sarcoptic mange rather than demodex. We treat animals with sarcoptic mange with a lyme sulfur dip.. the owners bring the animal in once a week for 3-5 weeks to kill it. They may always be carriers of it, however the dip is suppose to keep it from being symptomatic. You can purchase lyme sulfur dip through our clinic, so i assume you can find a clinic there that sells it as well. If her skin is that bad.. then she will most likely need antibiotics as well as the dip until infection has stopped and the mange is under control. Your other dog will need to be treated as well. Some clinics dip them for you (its not cheap, but the dip stinks terribly to have it in your house!) Also sarcoptic mange is the only mite that dogs/cats can give to humans, so be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after messing with the dogs! Good luck!

My vet give me a medicine you mix in a gallon of water and I had to treat my dog twice a day for six weeks to get rid of mange. I had to soak her down completely wish the smelly stuff, but it worked. She was a runt of the litter and her immune system was compromised but she made it! She's a boston terrier about half the size she should be.

you can buy mange dip at feed stores or from your vets office my dad use to use sulfer and burnt motor oil mixed together which also works but it would be safer to use dip and it wouldnt be as messy anything the dog touched oil got on and ruined but by the time the oil mixed with sulfer wore off by itself the mange mites were all dead and the dogs fur came back healthy and beautiful which i always felt my dad was putting the dog at risk by cureing it this way plus it puts the enviroment at risk as well so you'd be better off useing the dips
