I'm not really seeking advice with this question. I already have what need and know that these are both great rifles. I just am curious which of these two you guys prefer. I own a Remington but wouldn't mind having the Winchester. What about you? Which action, model, etc. do you like more. What are the pros and cons of each in your mind?

Thanks for any comments.

Bound's hubby here:

I have had a Remington 700 Varmint (.308) that I use for long range target shooting for about 12 years now, and I am very happy with it. I would buy another one in a heart beat. I have always wanted a Winchester Model 70, but they were too expensive for what I wanted (a Model 70T). This past fall, after the Winchester company we all knew and loved went belly up, I had the opportunity to buy a Model 70 all-weather in .270.

Personally, I think both are equally great rifles. I think any rifleman equipped with either rifle would be well equipped for anything. I also wish the Winchesters I grew up with were made again ... especially the long action heavy barreled target type rifles with the Springfield-style claw extractor!

I have one of each. The Remington has the edge on accuracy but the Winchester fits me a bit better. The Winchester also seems to have a smoother action on the bolt but I think the Remington is starting to smooth out some.

I don't think you can go wrong with either one, yet my experience and that of numerous other shooters I know have consistently had the Remington's as the more accurate of the two. Since accuracy is very important to me I doubt that I'd buy another Winchester, even if Winchester gets going again.

Winchester model 70s have a better extractor and ejector system then the Remington 700 making it better for dangerous game hunting (more reliable).

The 700 has a better and more accurate barrel imo. I prefer a pre'64 Winchester. I'll take the Remington 700 over a post '64 Winchester though.

Cpatra has hit the nail on the head, there's nothing I could add to the answer except that I'd probably sell my left nut for a pre 64 model 70.

I have a win. model 70 "classic" in 7 mag. It's a newer gun with the pre-64 bolt action. I've had it about 10 or so years and I love it. You can work the bolt up, back, forward, and back down with only one finger....VERY SMOOTH
