This guy told me if I wanted to hang out to give him a call? Then he said he was serious. What exactly does "hanging out" mean? Is this some lame way of asking me out?

Hanging out, is just a term that mutual friends use for spending time together doing what ever it is that they do. If you want to find out call him up and tell you want to hang out with him tonight. Then before the night is over you will know if it was a date or just hanging out. Depending on where the two of you end up.

yep, you're right. back in the days, people asked people to go out on a date. nowadays, people "hang out". its the same effect, but it sounds less formal.

BUT, i'd say if he really wants to go out with you he should be the one calling. that may sound a little old fashioned but i just think he should be putting in the effort. make him chase u. if you call him like he asked he'll think he has you wrapped around his finger.
