The only real cheap way to go in NYC would be to stay in a hostel or else outside the city (Brooklyn, Queens, etc.). However, you should be able to find something for around $150 providing you stay outside of Midtown. Check out Hotel-Alternatives.com they have a good selection of hotels and apartments in NYC.

Riverside Studios very far from the action. Try Hotel 31 on 31st St bettween Park Ave South and Lexington Ave, rooms are for around 125 per night. They are small, clean, shared bath but nice.

150 a night may get you a sub-average room. most likely with a shared bathroom. I would suggest not staying in manhattan but in one of the other bouroughs....check brooklyn's new marriot? They may be open, and about a 2 minute commute to manhattan.

Do you like roaches? and bedbugs? I don't think you can get a good place for that price.
Try somewhere in Jersey, just on the other side. The Marriot in Teaneck NJ is wonderful and inexpensive. Learn how to take the train to NYC.

if you're not from New York, you can stay at hostels there.
check on this website, they are cheaper than staying in hotel. I tried it and they are worth it. I stayed at Mt. Royal Hostel in upper west side.
