You are better off taking a subway to Coney Island - The F, N, Q, and D trains all terminate at Stillwell Avenue (they redid the terminal - very modern) - a block from Nathan's. Parts of Coney Island are very dangerous, and, you may have to park off the beaten path. Once in Coney Island, get a hot dog at Nathan's (Surf and Stillwell Avenues). Facing Nathan's, walk about three blocks to the left and you are at the Cyclone. Two or three blocks to the right of Nathan's is Keyspan Park - Brooklyn's minor league baseball team is The Cyclones - admission is very inexpensive. Parking at Keyspan Park is only $4, but I think you have to buy a ticket to the game. One block from Nathan's is Totonno's Pizza - second best pizza in New York - on Neptune Avenue an 15th Street - they don't sell pizza by the slice - you have to order a whole pie (it is SO worth it). The New York Aquarium is on Surf Avenue - keep walking past the Cyclone - great place to visit - I love the penguins. There is a Coney Island Museum - admission is one dollar. There's a circus sideshow. At the end of June, there is The Mermaid Parade and on July 4th there is the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest (you have no idea how gross this is unless you've seen this upclose - tv doesn't capture the sounds - or all the puking) Walk on the boardwalk. There isn't much left in Coney Island - there are used furniture stores where there used to be rides. The Cyclone and bumper cars are still there. An arcade with skeeball is still open. There are some fast food shops like Pizza Hut and KFC. I think the candy store to the right of Nathan's is still there - cotton candy. The place that sold that delicious watermelon and corn on the cob is gone. Anyone remember those machines that looked like scales and when you put in a penny or two, you got a foot massage? Those are long gone.
From Coney Isand, if you're using public transportation, you can take the B64 bus into Bay Ridge - there's a Century 21 on 86th Street and Fifth Avenue (much less crowded than the one in Manhattan - same great prices). There are excellent restaurants for your birthday dinner on Third Avenue,(great bakeries and pastry shops, too) and if you walk up into the 90's, you get this great upclose view of the Verrazano Bridge. Then, you can go back with the R train.
Happy birthday.

The only great "ride" is the Cyclone. It's still pretty good for an old rickety wooden coaster. I think it's like $5 a pop now. Parking tends to suck. If you get there early you can park in the Aquarium lot for a fee. Otherwise, take to the streets, but you'll likely have to walk quite a way to get to the boardwalk. If you don't know the area well, you could end up lost. The subway drops you right there (Q or D I believe). The beach is dirty and crowded in nice weather. A lot of stuff is gone now. The Freak Show is still there, but kind of lame. You can shoot a dude with a paintball gun (shoot the freak). Of course hit Nathans for some dogs and cheese fries and giant beers. There's some divey bars on the boardwalk and a ton of arcades. I generally only go for the Mermaid Parade myself. It's a great time!

You should check to see what is open before going. There is a massive renovation in the works at Coney Island.
I don't know when you Bday is, but the best day to go to Coney Island is for the Siren Festival (usually in the second week in July). I've been there for every Siren Festival since inception. Two stages, lots of bands, lots of people, the beach, the rides, and of course Nathans.

It's been a while since I've been there, but you are definitely getting into an older American tourist spot. The Cyclone roller coaster and Wonder Wheel are probably their two most famous rides, and are considered of historical importance. The park fronts on the boardwalk, which has tourist shops and eateries along the beach. The aquarium is just east of the amusement park, and it is worth seeing. They have a Beluga Whale tank as you first walk in.

Not too much to check out anymore....no parking anywhere, so you're better off taking the train...q train takes you right there.....stop at nathans of course, the aquarium is pretty cool, and you can walk the boardwalk. If you want rides, I would suggest six flags

Sorry to burst your bubble but Coney Island is closing so hurry up. Most amusements are already gone. Check out the freak show when you are there.
