Like I mentioned in the title, my boyfriend doesn't drink any water, ever. He probably goes on for months without water drinking a drop of water. He drinks soda(not diet), cranberry juice, orange juice and iced tea(snapple, arizona) regularly. He doesn't believe it will have any adverse effects on his health, because he sees drinking other liquids of common branded orange/cranberry juice and sodas as meeting the daily requirements of drinking water. With the kind of dependence our body has on water, I just fear he will end up with a LOT of health problems later on that stem from this issue.
Because he IS drinking other liquids, I was just wondering how seriously I should try to get him to drink water specifically? Is drinking other liquids besides water really enough like he thinks? If not, what are some things likely to go wrong in the longterm? Lastly, since he hates drinking water, what is the minimum amount of water he must drink, in addition to the other liquids?

I made it 30 years without drinking hardly any water. When working 10 years in hot kitchens would drink 6-8 liters of regular soda only. I have never had any severe dehydration. As noted earlier, you will get all the fluids you need from soda, tea, juices, etc...it doesn't have to be pure water. Caffeine will cause you to dehydrate some, but not enough to be concerned about with all the other fluids going on. The big thing is, as noted before, the calories from all the high glycemic indexed drinks. Soda is, of course, high in sugar and juices are refined fiberless pure sugar for the most part. Soooo, as a young man, he may not have problems with his weight....however if he is getting overweight then the he does have a health concern with the practice, but its not one centered around dehydration...but that of increasing obesity which causes all kinds of problems. Most men will have a metabolism change in their 20/30s that will wake them up to the need to cut down on all the sugar and start considering natural calorie free water.

He does need to drink water. The reccomended amount to drink daily is eight 8 ounce glasses a day. So 64 ounces a day.
Dehydration occurs when the body loses an excessive amount of water. It can be caused by a number of things including excessive sweating without fluid replacement, drugs, alcohol, caffeine, and improper diet.
Although hydration is a critical and important part of nutrition, it is often ignored. Many people still don't understand the importance of staying on top of their fluid intake during exercise.
Some things you should watch for are the following:
Headaches
Dizziness
Fatigue
Thirst
Nausea
Flushing
Confusion
These are signs of dehidration and if a lot of them occur he should probably start drinking water.
Hope this was helpful.

It could very likely be a side effect of his antidepressants. Unlikely at his age to be lack of testosterone, possible, but unlikely. He should talk to his doctor and try different meds. Stopping suddenly can be very dangerous. If he hasn't tried it and he's a good candidate, Wellbutrin tends not to have sexual side effects except many people actually have increased sexual desire due to the control of their depression. I don't know about you statement about not believing in medication. I hear that a lot but meds are not subjective truth. Medications are both overused and underused, the important thing is that you boyfriend doesn't kill himself and has a good life. If meds help him I don't know why you wouldn't believe in that. And I hope he is getting counseling as well, the best outcome for people with depression is when they use both meds and counseling. That works better than either by themselves. Marv

As long as he's getting fluids in his system its not a bad deal. Water is ideal because its clear cut how much you need. Juices and other stuff make things difficult because sometimes they contain substances that will actually require you body to take in more water. I think that as long as he isn't thirsty constantly he should feel any 'little water' or dehydration symptoms. As for his choose in fluids that could cause potential problems depending on how much he has. Sodas are sugar rich and can cause many problems such as diabetes. Drinking lots of teas can cause things such as increase chances of kidney stones.
I would stear him away from the sodas if you could. Try flavored water as those are a little more palatable.

I'm 60 years old and seldom drink water unless it's the flavored, bottle stuff and that isn't very often. The soda's aren't to great, but the fluid intake from the juices and teas is enough. Be is girlfriend and don't try to mother him.

Start by switching Snapple and Arizona for natural fruit juices. And the slowly you can try to change his mind and make him drink some water.

unless I am working out or so extremely hot I never really sit and drink lots of water. but I do eat a lot of salads/veggies and fruit which is where I get my water. I know I need to drink more but it is hard for me. sometimes it helps if I put a lemon in a water pitcher in the fridge or get flavored water to drink. I try my best!

Humans need water. If your boyfriend keeps on like that at best he'll end up with a lump of sugar for a liver and at worst with the worst kind of diabetes. We all need water, we are made of mostly water. Not only plants need water. You can live for months without food and just water, but you can only live for about a week without water.
