I would tell them to read something else. The Bible is to too old, too boring, too unbelievable, had too many different writers, and by todays standards, not that great for a work of fiction.

I'd tell them to make sure that the bible they're reading is a living bible. The flowery language of the King James is fine if you're more interested in memorizing bible verses to recite at dinner parties and impress your friends. But if you're looking to actually gain knowledge of what the bible is about, read a living bible. Many of them will put the books in chronological order so that the stories flow and make more sense historically. Then I would tell them to follow the order from beginning to end. You can't understand the bible by just skipping around reading verses. In order to understand it on your own (without taking someone elses word for what the bible does or does not say) you must read it to completion. It will take some time, but if you're going to read it at all....read it all.

-Genesis (1-11)is the “seed plot” of the Bible, and here we find the beginning, the source, the birth of everything. May I say that the first eleven chapters of Genesis are merely the introduction to the Bible, and we need to look at them in this fashion.
One of the best divisions which can be made of the Book of Genesis is according to the genealogies—i.e., according to the families.
There are certain things that you should note because the Book of Genesis is, actually, germane to the entire Scripture. The fact of the matter is that Genesis is a book that states many things for the first time: creation, man, woman, sin, sabbath, marriage, family, labor, civilization, culture, murder, sacrifice, races, languages, redemption, and cities.

EPH 6:11-17putting on the whole armor of GOD because we are unaware of the spiritual warfare we are under day by day and I believe that any person from young to old sinner to Christian should read this and come understand what it takes to protect ourselves from the evil one satan and I also have alot of other references to this passage that is very helpful in showing u how the devil can use seemingly harmless ways to attack us just think about the book of JOB he went through so much and yet he didn't know why.. cause he was in the flesh but spiritually there was a war going on between God and satan this should be an insight on what we are going through today and they need to know this to understand why we should hold Gods word in our hearts

That would really depend on who they were.

If they were just curious and looking to understand my faith, I'd tell them to read all the (sorry Protestant friends but this is the term I know...) Catholic letters. 1 & 2 Cor., Romans, Hebrews, yadda yadda. It's quick and easy reading. Explains the faith.

If they were someone of a different faith looking to marry a Christian, I'd advise them to read Song of Songs. It's all about the beauty of union.

If they were actively looking to BECOME Christian, I'd say Gospel of John.

Acts 10:34,35 'At this Peter opened his mouth and said: "For a certainty I percieve that God is not partial. But in every nation the man that fears him and works righteousness is acceptable to him." '
That no matter who you are or where you come from, if you love God you are worthy.

After that I'd head to Ecclesiates or Proverbs. They can be a bit tricky to understand but have patience and the meaning will come.

Acts 2:38. It's the entire salvation plan and everything you need to know to get started with God the way He planned, not man's ideas.

Revelations is interesting and it does make perfect sense when you understand how it is laid out, but salvation is more important than understanding the future of the Earth as we know it.
