If you want nice and calm do NOT get a puppy, they do not stay cute little things.
They become hyper little rugrats with sharp pointy teeth that love to bite on hands and love to pee and poop all over, particularily rugs and beds until they mature( some breeds take up to 3 years old) but training is necessary to teach them how to be nice and calm, and what you expect of them and there may be periods of time where they will become a handful, they do not come premade angel models it is a lot of work to make then into animals you are comfortable living with,. when they become teenagers they are like the human kind tend to want to do their own thing so go thru a period of rebellion and being obnoxious
Some one suggested a greyhound, as adults they are couch slugs, that love to run once or twice a day for about 2 minutes and that will put them to sleep, they spend about 18 hours a day sleeping, just the way I like them. As puppies most owners refer to them as land sharks, so definitely not what you want.
If you want nice and calm go to a rescue to get an adult, other your pup will likely end up in a pound

Australian Shepherds are wonderful! Theyre very active, are pretty average shedders, learn quickly, and are very friendly. They also tend to form a very strong bond with theyre owner... strong to the point where they will want to be with you almost all the time. Ive heard of many people whom go to take a shower and come out to find the aussie waiting outside the door. XD Good luck picking a dog!

go to the animal shelter and look at the dogs/puppies that they have.. if you dont kind one there get there website and look on that daily. also try www.petfinder.com they have thousands of different breeds and ages.. and a puppy is not going be calm, sorry, they have a lot of energy and you will need to play or walk it to get the energy out. if you want a calm dog, get an adult dog. I find them to be soooo much better than a puppy. puppies just take up so much time and energy. good luck
DONT BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER ANIMALS DIE!!

Greater Swiss Mountain Dog. Before you get a dog make sure you are willing to spend the required amount of time to care for and exercise a dog. Most dogs that don't behave well are deprived of exercise. Dogs that are allowed to get out and exercise are generally more well behaved.
The GSMD is a great family dog....and they are large enough to keep people away.

i think it depends if you want a big or small dog. if a medium to a big size i suggest a pit bull. from my personal experience, my baby girl Tessie is the sweetest thing ever and never have i seen what people say about pits in her. she is not aggressive and never growls or barks mad. from my experience pits are very intelligent, loving, playful, obedient and very, very active. My Tessie is very calm as well and hardly ever sheds she is the greatest dog ever.you can show them tricks and they seem to learn very quickly. and not to mention they are gorgeous dogs.
hope you find the perfect pup that fits into your lifestyle.
Good Luck :)
