Every person is born into this world dichotomous (meaning
physical body and soul). The Soul contains mentality, emotion,
self-consciousness, conscience and volition. This is what
every human has. But when a person believes in Christ they
get The Holy Spirit. Then they are trichotomous. Meaning
body, soul and spirit. People interchange soul and spirit and
that is wrong. The conscience gets its norms and standards from
the learning process and everything around it. The volition
is the choosing center. Then there is the emotion and they
react to the thinking process. Mentality is the area of the mind that is the learning area. Not everyone is endowed with
high intellect. The soul of a person will live on into eternity.
Either heaven with the perfect God, (Trinity) or hell and will
know and remember all their rejection of Christ on this earth.
There is only one life and you can decide which way you want
to go.

The word says that God breathed into the nostrils of man and he became a living soul.
The actual "substance" of God is of a spiritual essence which unlike the physiological aspects of finite existence is not subject to mortality. That is it continues existence beyond the encumberance of the physical body. It is this spiritual nature derived from Spirit (God) in the form of breath which when compounded or contacting the flesh creates the consciousness. This is why when you die they say that you exspire...literally, the breathe leaves you.
A like illustration could be a lightbulb. The Body is akin to all the material parts, the filament, outer glass, electrical wire, etc., The Spirit is like the electrical current that flows through the material parts and the seat of your personality which is your soul with its faculties of emotion, intellect and volition would be as the resulting waves of light or the illuminating reality of the physical and nonphysical elements of existence.
What you call your awareness or self consciousness is a residual effect of spirit and body co-mingling.
Science will make a claim that this is not their realm primarily because it has the effect of infering the existence of an intelligence in the design and purpose of the existence of life but this is just a lack of backbone on their part because while science will say they are only interested in the physical reality (thus the term "physics") science can observe and gather data on the actions of intelligence which to deny is to give up the idea that truth can be had concerning ultimate reality and to surrender to universal skepticism.

Consciousness is a term used, in most teachings of nonduality, to describe God. It's the substrate within which the individualized perspective (human) arises, and falls. IOW, human consciousness comes and goes, but the singular Consciousness remains as the foundation of all human's ability to be consciously aware of anything. What we all are, is not the human vehicle of perception that arises and falls, but rather Consciousness itself.
Consciousness is not a thing or a field or an energy, and so it is not located in time or space. Our physical world is sometimes referred to as the linear domain, and Consciousness is referred to as the nonlinear domain, outside of time/space.
Since all scientific investigation and instrumentation lies within the linear, science will have great difficulty exploring Consciousness, and as yet has not formally approached it. However, quantum physics, at least on the fringes, has already noticed that human consciousness is inseparable from the behavior of physicality on the sub-atomic level.
My personal opinion is that zero point energy (ZPE) lies on the threshold between the linear and the nonlinear, and gets as close to Consciousness as we've ever been in the realm of science.
The brain is a manifestation of Consciousness, along with the rest of the body, and so acts as a receiver for thought, and is not, itself, the source of human consciousness.

In my opinion, the self aware consciousness comes from human self, soul and spirit which he or she has been taught how to use it from the parents. In my experience I learn my self aware consciousness from my mother. She taught me to be aware of my surrounding especially people. She said there are many kinds of human beings and some are good while others are devils. I have to watch out. She also stated about being a good human being as such thinking good thing and no harm to others, always helping others and giving more while taking less. I never forget what I was taught from her and it always with me the rest of my life.

the brain
thought is inthe brain
memory is in the brain
emotion is in the brain
sense perception is in the brain
I don't need to cite untold thousands of neurological papers to prove this do I?
If all those things are in the brain, so is conciousness.
And as for a soul, what is left for it? The brain has everything else. What good is a soul if it has no thought, memory, emotion or sensory perception? None.

If emotion is in brain, why do people truly feel a pain in their chest when their heart is broken? Anyone who has experienced it will tell you that you FEEL it in your chest.
It all comes from God, our Father. In metaphysics you can get all sorts of twisted, but if you have any questions about being ' here ' go run into a brick wall and tell me if you are here and the brick wall is there.

Thats a very good quesiton- the current answer is "We don't know"- and as soon as we do figure it out, we'll make a computer emulate that form of thinking.
