I think it can sometimes.
My best friend is a guy and we met when we were 17 - he wanted more, I didn't. But no, he never made me feel uncomfortable about it and I never felt like I was under pressure to be anything more than his friend.
If you have a very good relationship, things shouldn't change at all. There could be some awkwardness at first, but it will pass.

Never lose hope though - I'm about to marry my best friend ;)

Oh yeah, I've had that happen before and it made things awkward, It's really hard to let him down gently and if you don't let him know you're not into him you lead him on. Done that before too. After all that if you're still friends, congrats.

that has happened to me before and everything was fine. in the beginning it was kind of strange but as long as both people act mature and cool about it then it should work out. just don't act uncomfortable or awkward when you see them...

Yes, it would be hard at first. But you could work it out if you talked to him about it and expressed this concern to him.
